About Saris (Sarees)
A sari (also spelled saree) is the traditional garment worn by many women in the Indian subcontinent. The garment is known by different names in various Indian languages; in Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi, it is known as sadi in Kannada as seere; in Telugu as 'chee-ra and in Tamil as podavai.
The sari is long strip of unstitched cloth, ranging from five to nine yards in length, which can be draped in various styles. The most common style is for the sari to be wrapped around the waist, with one end then draped over the shoulder. The sari is usually worn over a petticoat (called lehenga/ghagra in northern India and pavada/pavadai in the south) and a low-cut, short-sleeved, midriff-baring blouse known in north India as a choli.
Styles of draping
The most common style of draping the sari is wrapped around the waist, then one end is draped over the shoulder. However, the sari can be draped in several different styles, though some styles do require a sari of a particular length or form. The French cultural anthropologist and sari researcher, Chantal Boulanger, categorizes sari drapes in the following families. Each family may contain many, slightly different styles.

Fashion Week by Berns...Dorothea
When I am photographing at fashion weeks, I often wonder what models are really like. I think most seem incredibly nice (and patient!) especially with all the photographers around. Anyway, I got to have a little chat with Dorothea Barth Jorgensen after the Lagom show in Stockholm and I can confirm that she is super, super sweet, and her feet have remained firmly planted on the ground despite all her success. Fashion Week by Berns (Stockholm)....Studded Caramel
I spent 2 nights in Stockholm at the beginning of the week photographing at fashion week. It was my second time in Stockholm and it has left me wanting more.....
Highlights?
- Dinner (two nights in a row!) at Restaurant Sturehof. We tried to get into PA&Co one night but it was booked out. If you visit Restaurant Sturehof make sure you try the Swedish crayfish and the poached cod with brown butter and horseradish. Delicious.
- A trip on the archipelago in a speedboat. So much fun and it was lovely seeing all the gorgeous little Swedish summer houses dotted around the islands. I would love to spend a week just puttering around the different islands on a boat
- The Acne stores (of course!)
- The Elle pop-up store and cafe in Stureplan (great coffee and pastries)
- The Byredo store (I am still obsessed with the Pulp and Rose Noire fragrances since I smelt them in Barney's in New York last year)
- The Italian coffee shop in Stureplan (not sure of the name but it is near Urban Outfitters) where I went with Caroline and Daniel from Stockholm Streetstyle
- All the girls I photographed in Stockholm (so friendly, pretty and stylish!)
